Innovative Team Learning to Enhance Racial Equity Work

Date: August 22 at 1:00:00 PM | Registration Link

Session Description: An “Amazing Race”-style competition across the city. A provocative art exhibition. The inspirational stories of prominent women of color. This virtual session – adapted from a GEO 2023 Learning Conference in-person session – will feature modified versions of these organizational shared learning examples. When organizations prioritize dynamic and innovative shared learning experiences among departments, staff are better equipped to engage in community and are more driven to take on the essential work of advancing racial equity. As offices across the globe closed their doors amid the pandemic, Ruth Mott Foundation staff took fresh approaches to shared learning that allowed staff to stay engaged, build trust, process the current events that shocked the nation and underscore a commitment to racial equity. In this interactive virtual session, you will engage in learning exercises, gain awareness of tools and activities that can foster racial equity understanding across foundation roles, and brainstorm resources in your own community that can be used to facilitate shared learning at your own organizations.

Presenters:

  • Tanya Upthegrove Gregory, (she/her/hers), Learning Officer, Ruth Mott Foundation

Aligning Purpose and Practice - Building Partner-Centered Grantmaking Infrastructure

Date: August 30th at 1:30:00 PM | Registration Link

Session Description: As funders, value statements are the north stars that drive our organizations and are often revealed to our nonprofit partners through our processes. Therefore, grants and knowledge management teams form grantmaking infrastructure reflective of their organization’s mission, vision, and values.

To support the economic, political, and cultural power of BIPOC communities and all underserved communities more effectively, we need to meet our nonprofit partners where they are. This workshop-style virtual session will help you understand how to align principles with action and support your efforts in crafting nonprofit partner-centered funding systems at your philanthropic institution. We will discuss the issues with status quo grant reporting practices, and participants will share their stories and goals.

You will hear from peers who have retooled their reporting methods, integrated equity, transparency, and accessibility and explored critical lessons from moving from concept to action. Since 2020, many grantmakers have embraced new ways of interacting with their nonprofit partners and grappled with how to shift toward collective decision-making practices. Reporting is no exception. Now is the perfect time to establish procedures that center our nonprofit partners. Let’s collaboratively learn and grow!

Presenters:

  • Rachel Kimber (she/her/hers), Vice President, Grants Management, Smile Train
  • Blanch Vance (she/her/hers), Senior Manager, Strategic Operations and Grants, Grove Foundation
